Technical Support Note 7

Word Macro Installation With Both Word 6.0 and 7.0

Issue:

Word macro installer installs in Word 7.0 rather than Word 6.0 (both Word versions installed on the same machine).

Solution:

The Word Macro Installer detects the appropriate version of Word and modifies the corresponding Normal.dot file (this is where the macro is installed). To install the macro into the desired version of Word (e.g. Word 6.0).

  1. Make sure all applications are shut down. If Word 7.0 runs automatically when starting Windows, quit Word 7.0.
  2. Run Word 6.0.
  3. Using File menu, choose Open and open the file SignWD6.doc from the Signit directory (c:\signit).
  4. Click OK when the menu comes up. The Installer should come back and tell you that the installation is complete. Click OK and use the File menu, Close command to close SignWD6.doc. If during the macro installation, Word asks you to enter a name to Save As the Normal.dot, click Cancel. In this case for some reason your Normal.dot is being used by someone or the file is write protected. This needs to be corrected before running the Macro Installer again.

If for some reason the above steps do not work, it is possible to copy the Normal.dot from Word 7.0 and install it in Word 6.0. Before proceding with the next steps it is critical to understand that copying the Normal.dot files, copies all default settings for the startup blank document. If you installed another program that set up menu commands, and macros these applications may need to be reinstalled to reinstall their macros.

  1. Run Word 7.0
  2. Click on Tools menu, Options command. Click on the File Location tab. Look at the file location specified for User Templates. Write this path down (e.g. C:\MSOffice\Templates), this is the location of the Normal.dot file for Word 7.0.
  3. Run the Sign-It Macro Installer in Word 7.0. If already installed skip this step.
  4. Quit Word 7.0. Run Word 6.0.
  5. Again click on Tools menu, Options command. Click on File Location tab. Look at the file location specified for User Templates. Write this path down (e.g. C:\Winword\Templates), this is the location of the Normal.dot file for Word 6.0. Quit Word 6.0.
  6. Using the File Manager in Windows locate the file Normal.dot for Word 6.0. You just wrote down this location. Make a copy of your original Normal.dot, e.g. make a copy and call it Normal1.dot.
  7. Open another Window in File Manager and locate the Normal.dot file for Word 7.0 (written down previously). Now copy the Normal.dot file from Word 7.0 template directory to Word 6.0 template directory.
  8. Start Word 6.0 and you should see the pencil icon on the toolbar and the SignIt command in the Insert Menu.
